In 782, Witiza, son of the Count of Maguelonne, advisor to Charlemagne, founded the Abbey of Aniane after becoming a monk under the name of Saint Benoit. It introduces under the rule of the Benedictines the obligation to plant vines contributing to the development of the vineyards of Grès de Montpellier and more than a thousand wine-growing abbeys in Europe.
